The Most Dangerous Risks in Your Business Don't Swim on the Surface

July 20, 2026

At first glance, the water seems peaceful.

That's exactly what makes Shark Week so compelling year after year. The real danger isn't on the surface. It's already moving below it.

Cybercriminals work the same way. The threats facing businesses today are built to hide in plain sight until the moment accounts are drained, systems fail or operations grind to a halt.

And during the summer, when routines change, employees travel and oversight gets lighter, attackers know many organizations are easier to catch off guard.

Here are three ways they're circling right now.

1. Fake invoices and vendor impersonation

Hackers don't always need technical access. Often, all it takes is one convincing email.

This tactic is known as business email compromise (BEC). It relies on pretending to be a vendor, supplier or executive your team already recognizes and trusts.

The message looks routine, a payment gets sent to the "vendor," and by the time anyone notices the request was fraudulent, the money is gone.

These attacks surge during vacation season for a reason. When the person who usually approves payments is out, requests often land with someone who doesn't know what normal should look like. Temporary backups are less likely to question urgency, and criminals count on that hesitation.

The best defense is straightforward: create a verification step for every financial request that comes by email. A quick callback to a trusted number, never the one in the message, can stop most of these scams before any money moves.

2. Phishing attacks aimed at distracted employees

Phishing succeeds because it's designed around how people behave when they're busy.

Attackers intentionally create those moments. An employee who's juggling tasks sees a password reset alert and clicks through. Another receives a text that appears to come from IT. An email arrives just before a meeting asking for immediate approval on a wire transfer. No one pauses to verify because stopping feels inconvenient.

The strongest protection isn't just technology; it's a workplace culture that rewards caution.

Team members should feel confident slowing down when something looks unusual:

· An unexpected login request

· A payment instruction that appeared out of nowhere

· A link in an email they weren't expecting

Attackers rely on speed to force mistakes. When you slow the process down, you take that advantage away from them.

3. Third-party risks that spread fast

When a vendor with access to your systems is compromised, the threat doesn't stop with them. It can move directly into your environment through the connection they already have to your business.

This is supply chain exposure, and most businesses have far more of it than they realize. Connected software tools, service providers with stored credentials and contractors whose access was never revoked after a project ended all create paths many owners have never fully mapped.

Outsourcing a service does not outsource accountability.

To understand your supply chain exposure, you need clear answers to three questions:

1. Which vendors can access your data or systems?

2. What are they connected to?

3. Who internally is responsible for managing those relationships?

If those answers aren't obvious, your business is carrying unnecessary risk.

By the time you notice it, it's already moving

Sharks don't announce themselves, and neither do the cybercriminals targeting your business today.

The companies that get hit aren't always the ones ignoring obvious warning signs. More often, they're the ones that assume everything is fine because nothing appears broken.

Summer is when schedules loosen, attention drifts and the water looks calmest. It's also when attackers are most active.

We help businesses identify where they're exposed across vendors, employee behavior and day-to-day operations before a problem turns into a costly incident.
